An excellent review article on finance and growth has just been published:

Bordo, M.D. and Rousseau, P.L. (2006) ?Legal-political factors and the historical evolution of the finance-growth link?, European Review of Economic History, 10 (3), pp. 421-44.

I have also come across a reasonably accessible (for the non-economist) review article which will bring you up to date on growth theory and empirics:

Rogers, M. (2003) ?A survey of economic growth?, Economic Record, 79 (1), pp. 112-35.

Finally, just published, and likely to become the standard work:

Eichengreen, B.J. (2007) The European economy since 1945: coordinated capitalism and beyond. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press.
