I have now had two enquiries about reading for New Labour and the media, and in particular whether spin has backfired for the party and government. I want to counsel grave caution on this topic; most of the writing is by journalists and is of very variable quality. By all means do Google searches on the topic, but be very careful with the results. From my database, I would recommend:

Bale, T. and Sanders, K. (2001) ‘“Playing by the book”: success and failure in John Major’s approach to prime ministerial media management’, Contemporary British History, 15 (4), pp. 93-110.
Hennessy, P. (2005) ‘Rulers and servants of the state: the Blair style of government, 1997-2004’, Parliamentary Affairs, 58 (1), pp. 6-16.
Jones, N. (1996) Soundbites and spin doctors: how politicans manipulate the media - and vice versa. London: Orion Mass Market.
O’Hara, K. (2004) Trust: from Socrates to spin. Cambridge: Icon Books.
Price, L. (2006) Spin doctor’s diary: inside number 10 with New Labour. London: Hodder.
Wring, D. (2004) The politics of marketing the Labour Party. London: Palgrave.
Wring, D. (2005) ‘Politics and the media: the Hutton inquiry, the public relations stateand crisis at the BBC’, Parliamentary Affairs, 58 (2), pp. 380-93.

You can also look at the recent election studies, all fully recorded in the handbook. If people find other good references please post to the site.
